Training for learning and serving (TLS) is an experience and reflection-based programme designed for those people who wish to explore alongside others, Christian discipleship for personal enrichment or more focussed vocational service. It can be accessed with a minimal academic background but can be used to reach higher education certificate and diploma levels of attainment. A foundation course of two years is supplemented by one year courses on a variety of more specialist subjects providing, for example, gateways into a deeper exploration of worship-leadership, pastoral care and prayer. All courses use home study, tutor-guidance, regional group experiences, and most have weekend residential gatherings to provide a varied and flexible approach to learning.
The aim of this workbook is to bring encouragement, hope and fresh vision to these small charges, and to help them see themselves as vital organisms with the potential for change and growth, rather than allow their slightness to drag them down into a slough of despairing inactivity and eventual death. For small charges are a “welcome” ingredient in the eco-system of any Province; ‘they are not failed large churches’ , but a different – and precious - species altogether.
